Lawmakers Ask Vilsack for Dairy Support

This week, a bipartisan group of over 60 lawmakers, led by Senator Patrick Leahy (D-VT), sent a letter to USDA asking for emergency financial aid for the dairy industry. Paralleling USDA’s move to help the cotton industry, lawmakers are asking USDA to use authority under the Commodity Credit Corporation to provide funding. The 2014 Farm Bill introduced a new dairy support program, the Market Protection Program (MPP), which farmers are still adjusting to and may be revisited in the 2018 Farm Bill. The chairmen of the House and Senate Agriculture Committees were not on the letter. The letter can be viewed here.
