The Utah Department of Agriculture and Food’s (UDAF) Division of Laboratory Services Division has completed its move to the Utah Unified Laboratory Building, located in Taylorsville, Utah.  The move completes efforts to expand and improve the lab’s ability to perform food safety and agriculture product testing.  The lab serves as a resource for UDAF divisions that collect and test raw and processed foods as well as confirm truth in labeling claims.

The new building houses the UDAF’s four laboratories; the Dairy Testing Lab where products from dairies and dairy plants are tested before they are sold in grocery stores; the Feed and Fertilizer Lab tests animal feed and fertilizer products to confirm content; the Meat Lab tests consumer grade meat for water and fat content and samples from meat plants are tested for the presence of pathogens; and the Pesticide Lab tests for pesticide residue in soils, foods, and other products.

“This is an excellent example of the good things that can happen when state agencies form partnerships and work for a common goal,” said Commissioner of Agriculture and Food, LuAnn Adams. “By coming together, we consolidated our resources, and found efficiencies that benefit all of our missions.  This is a wise use of public funds.” She added.

One of the upcoming challenges for the UDAF is implementing the new federal Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA).  Joining the Unified Lab will help the agency keep up with Utah’s growth and respond to the technical demands associated with FSMA and other programs.

The Division’s previous lab was situated in space at the UDAF Building that is designed for traditional office duties, not laboratory science.

“We are excited about our new lab,” said Dr. Weston Judd, Director of Laboratory Services.  The consistent environmental controls of temperature and ventilation will help us produce more reliable and accurate test results,” he added.

The Unified Lab Building is located at, 4451 South 2700 West Taylorsville, also houses the State Medical Examiner’s Office and the State Crime Laboratory.
