Washington, DC, January 25, 2017 – The National Association of State Departments of Agriculture (NASDA) is gearing up for its 2017 Winter Policy Conference, States Driving Solutions, in Washington, DC next week. The event, held January 30 to February 1 will be attended by the commissioners, secretaries, and directors of agriculture, as well as their staff and a variety of federal and industry stakeholders.
Led by NASDA President and Louisiana Commissioner of Agriculture & Forestry Dr. Mike Strain, NASDA Members will discuss and vote on a number of policy amendments and action items which address topics such as the importance of international trade for U.S. agriculture, labeling and marketing claims, and dairy trade with Canada. NASDA’s board of directors will also establish the organization’s policy priorities for the coming year, as well as priorities for the upcoming farm bill.
The line-up of speakers includes the influential voices of Dr. Stephen Ostroff, Deputy Commissioner for Foods and Veterinary Medicine at the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, Kevin Shea, Administrator of the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS), Dr. Neal Gutterson with DuPont Pioneer, and more. In addition a panel discussion on agriculture policy in the year ahead will be moderated by Deb Atwood, Executive Director of AGree, and will feature Dr. Kathleen Merrigan, Executive Director of Sustainability at the George Washington University; John Bode, President & CEO of the Corn Refiners Association; and Dr. Joe Glauber, Senior Fellow at the International Food Policy Research Institute.
NASDA will host a Congressional Reception Tuesday evening in the Capitol Visitor Center, generously sponsored by Syngenta.
NASDA is a nonpartisan, nonprofit association which represents the elected and appointed commissioners, secretaries, and directors of the departments of agriculture in all fifty states and four U.S. territories.
