NASDA’s Next Generation is a comprehensive student program designed to cultivate the next wave of leaders in agriculture policy and public service. In bridging together the Agriculture Policy Summit with the NASDA’s Next Generation, this unified program offers undergraduate and graduate students an unparalleled opportunity to engage directly with state and federal agricultural leaders, expand their understanding of the agricultural policy-making process and explore career pathways within the industry.

Events

NASDA Annual Meeting
Students join commissioners, secretaries and directors of state departments of agriculture during a weeklong summit that allows them to:

  • Learn about emerging issues and trends affecting the industry.
  • Network with government leaders, industry partners and sponsors.
  • Participate in exclusive site visits and career development activities, such as tours of agricultural facilities and other industry hubs.

The 2025 NASDA Annual Meeting will be held in Rogers, Arkansas, from Sept. 14-18.

Winter Policy Conference
Students gain first-hand exposure to the federal agriculture policy-making process through a three-day summit in Washington, D.C. In past years, the summit has included:

  • A dedicated visit to the Embassy of Canada and the U.S. Department of Agriculture, where students learn about the work of the different stakeholder agencies that play a role in shaping agricultural policy.
  • Interactive workshop sessions with NASDA Foundation partner organizations.

The 2025 Winter Policy Conference will be held in Washington, D.C., from Feb. 24-26.

Program Impact

NASDA’s Next Generation has made a profound impact on students and the future of agriculture. By merging the Agriculture Policy Summit and the NASDA’s Next Generation initiative, the program’s reach and influence continue to expand.

  • Student Participation: Since 2015, over 125 students have participated in the program, including representation from each of the regional NASDA associations.
  • Scholarship Support: In 2022, all 20 participants in the Agriculture Policy Summit received $1,000 Workforce Development Scholarships to support their transition into the agriculture workforce.

“The brilliance and perspectives of these students are needed to move our agricultural and food systems forward to meet the needs of the next generations,” NASDA CEO Ted McKinney said. “This generation of young leaders bring a unique perspective to our Annual Meeting and Winter Policy Conference every year, and we are proud of the connections they are able to make.”
